Wesley Walter Knape, Sr., of Wilmington, NC, died Friday, June 10, 2005, in New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Moulton, Texas, on November 24, 1919, the son of the late Otto F. and Lula Meyer Knape. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Parkinson Knape.

Mr. Knape graduated from Southwest Texas State College. He served his country honorably in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was an Elder and Deacon at St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church. Mr. Knape retired from Wilmington International Airport as Chief of the Control Tower after 32 years of service. He was in the first class of Air Traffic Controllers in the United States and was the last one from his class to retire from work.

Mr. Knape was a member of The Kiwanis Club, enjoyed square dancing with the Port City Mavericks, and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are three children, Frederick P. Knape of New York City, NY, Wesley W. Knape, Jr. and wife Lynn, and Carolyn Moore and husband Robert, both of Wilmington, NC; four grandchildren, Jonathan W. Smith, Elizabeth Moore, Taylor Moore, and Randall Thomas; a brother, Weldon Knape of Temple, TX; and a sister, Mabel Phillips of Flower Mound, TX.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 PM Monday, June 13, 2005, in St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM until 3:00 PM Monday at St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Lifecare Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401, or to St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1416 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.
