Jane H. Flick Smith Obituary
SMITH.---At her home in Unionville, Whiteside Co., Ill., Tuesday, Jan. 29, 1901, MRS JOHN SMITH, aged 82 years, 3 months and 11 days.
Jane H. Fluck (Flick) was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Lamb Fluck(Flick), both of whom were of German descent. In early life they came to Pennsylvania and were married in Northampton county, afterwards locating in Columbia county, that state, where Mrs. Smith was born, Oct. 28, 1818, being the youngest but one of a family of ten children. When she was nine years of age she became a member of the family of her sister, Mrs. Catherine Appleman of Montour Co., Penn. Her father died in 1864 in Lycoming Co., Penn., aged 85 years. Her mother also died there on Oct. 28, 1860 at the age of 79 years.
She was married to John Smith on Thursday, January 17, 1839. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Smith were six in number as follows; Mathias, who was a soldier in the Union army, and died at Chattanooga, Tenn., in 1864 at the age of 24 years; Catherine, now the wife of H. P. Smith of Fulton; Peter F. married Ida Hiner and resides in Clyde township, this county; William married Susannah Sykes and resides in Morrison; Effie Maria, the wife of John Kaler who resides in Morrison; Stephen P. married Lucy Stapleton and lives at Union Grove, this county. The family lived in Pennsylvania until 1859, when they removed to Illinois and located near White Rock, in Ogle county. After a brief residence there they settled on a farm in Lee county, which they occupied for some years. In 1860 they located on a farm in Clyde township, Whiteside Co., where they resided till 1892, when they removed to Unionville, where they have since resided.
The deceased was taken sick a week ago last Saturday night with pneumonia and failed rapidly until summoned to her Maker at 10:30 o’clock Tuesday morning. She was a member of the Spring Valley Presbyterian church in Ustick, having professed faith in the Lord when she was twenty years old. Mr. Smith also became a member of the same church. He was stricken with paralysis a week ago last Sunday and is failing rapidly; and it is doubtful if he survives the attack.
The funeral will be held at the home of the deceased at one o’clock this afternoon, Rev. J. W. Skinner officiating. The interment will be made in Grove Hill cemetery.

Arrived in America: 1785 Oct 29.
Ship: Lydia
Ship's Captain: Gardner Hammond
According to Pa. German Pioneers V.3 by Strassburger & Hinke, on pg. 13:
Listed as family #2 were: Philip Flick, who arrived with son: John, son: Anthony, son: Lewis
and daughter: Anna Maria
The ship itself sailed from the Dutch port of Amsterdam. There were no places of origin listed for the passengers.
The Anna Maria listed as Philip's daughter was in fact his wife. His daughter Anna Maria was, according to church records from the Zion Stone Church, born in 1797, 12 years after the trip from Germany.
According to research by Peter Jung over in Germany, Philip's parents were Johannes Peter Flick and Anna Gertruda Goebel. In 1750 young Johannes Peter left Emmerichenhain to serve as a soldier in the Netherlands. While he was away, Anna Gertruda became pregnant by Peter's brother Gerlach Paul. This is supported by a copy of Phillipus Heinrich's baptism record from 1751. The text of the baptism record is as follows:
4th of February (1751) Johannes Peter Flick`s wife from here named Anna
Gertruda brought during his absence, serving in Dutch services,
an illegal son for baptism. As the father of that child
she declared her husband`s brother GERLACH PAUL FLICK, Schöffe
Jonas Flick`s son from here . Godfathers...
The child was baptized Philippus Henrich
The word Schöffe translates to Alderrman and Jonas was the short version of Johann Christianus.
Johannes Peter came back later and had 7 of his own children (between 1756 and 1766) in Emmerichenhain. That indicates that he didn`t emigrate in 1751 with Gerlach and the other 2 Flick's.
It is unknown if Gerlach had already decided to emigrate, but almost immediately after the baptism, he did indeed make the trip to the New World. You can imagine what may have happened when his elder brother came back to confront his younger brother. In addition, Johann Christianus` family was a very honourable and prominent one in Emmerichenhain and Gerlach Paul was now something of a pariah.
Johannes Peter cared for his brother`s son but everyone knew Philipp Henrich was not his true son. In fact, when he married Anna Maria Jung, according to the church records, the minister declared him to be the foster son of Johannes Peter.
So even though Philipp Henrich was the oldest boy in the family, he had no chance of ever having his own property. Finally, it seems Philip decided that if he were to have a chance to improve his life and provide for his growing family himself, he would have to relocate to America. Gerlach Paul obviously knew about his son Philip. It is supposed that he sent the money for Philip to emmigrate to America. This supposition is supported by a cryptic line at the end of Gerlach Paul's last will and testament.
...."whereas I have paid in my lifetime 50 pounds for a certain Philip Flick who is since departed this life, this 50 pounds with interest should remain in the hands of the children of said Philip."
Once in America Philip bought land and settled in the same township as Gerlach Paul, even attending the same church. (Zion Stone Church) As there is no mention in either of their will's about their true relationship, it is reasonable to assume that they decided to keep that information secret to avoid embarrassment to their families both in America and back in Germany.
