The Aucoin's were granted land in Acadia by the French. When England took over Acadia, they exiled the French. Some ran to the South and populated New England area while others were captured and sent to England and then from there back to France.

France kept most of the refugees on a tiny island off the West Coast of France called Bell-Ile-en-Mer. Their families were later allowed to go to Louisiana aboard 3 or 4 ships. Madeleine and her mother were listed as passengers boarding the ship L'Amite. No record of Jean Baptiste. However, he was listed as head of household disembarking in New Orleans.

They are listed as arriving in La. in November and Charles was born in May, meaning he was probably conceived on board the ship during the long journey across the Atlantic.
